Brief Description of the Fellowship Assignment
Assignments include, but are not limited to:
- Evaluation of a Surveillance System
- Project Title: Enhanced Respiratory Illness Surveillance Project
- Description: ACDC collected and obtained enhanced data variables for hospitalized cases of RSV, COVID-19, & influenza between 10/01/2024 – 5/31/2025. Additionally, it has been noted by the investigation team anecdotally that there seemed to be a high proportion of flu/RSV comorbidities in children that were hospitalized. This data may reveal additional information about risk factors for hospitalization and comorbidities.
- Project Title: Enhanced Respiratory Illness Surveillance Project
- Analysis and Interpretation of Recently Acquired Coccidioidomycosis Data in Clark County
- Description: Since 09/2024, ACDC started doing full interviews and investigations on cocci cases, collecting additional information about the cases possible exposure and demographic information. This data has not been reviewed or analyzed. With the exception of an internship project many years ago, this is the first time the SNHD investigation staff has completed full investigations to collect important details about the cases. With ongoing growth, construction and development in the Las Vegas Valley, it would be great to see if the data reveals anything about the risk of exposure (geographically, associated with hobbies like off-roading, or construction and new housing and commercial development) which could inform new public health messaging locally.
- Analysis of Maternal Mortality in Southern Nevada
- Description: This analytical project will examine the risk factors associated with maternal mortality in Southern Nevada using population-based surveillance and administrative data. The fellows will analyze linked vital records, hospital discharge data, and other relevant sources to identify key demographic, clinical, and social determinants contributing to maternal deaths. The project will involve descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses to explore trends, disparities across racial/ethnic and geographic groups, and potential preventable factors. Fellows will produce an analytic report and presentation summarizing their findings, along with policy-relevant recommendations to inform maternal health interventions and reduce mortality risk in the region.
- Project Title: Development of an Outbreak Detection System for Clark County, NV
- Description: This project involves the design and implementation of outbreak detection models aimed at identifying emerging disease threats in real-time. Data from multiple sources would be incorporated, such as hospital reports, syndromic surveillance, social media, and SNHD surveillance data. Different models should be explored and validated to find the best fit for Clark County. Key features would include anomaly detection, geographic visualization, and thresholds for alerts to SNHD leadership. The primary objective is to enable early detection of outbreaks to minimize public health risks and support timely intervention. Faster outbreak recognition will allow for earlier intervention, reduce disease spread, and support SNHD’s mission to assess, protect and promote the health, the environment, and the well-being of Southern Nevada communities and visitors.
- Project Title: Forecasting Respiratory Disease in Clark County, NV
- Description: This project aims to develop a forecasting system for respiratory diseases by leveraging data such as syndromic surveillance and traditional public health surveillance to detect early patterns and predict future outbreaks of respiratory illnesses such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Historical and current data should be used to analyze trends and generate short- and medium-term forecasts. The goal is to enhance public health preparedness and guide timely response strategies. Anticipating increased respiratory illness activity will assist allows SNHD to take faster action such as preparing resources, earlier vaccination efforts, and notifying the public to help reduce the spread of disease.
